You have to share the road with trucks in Ohio, but that does not mean you need to linger. If you have to pass a truck, it’s wise to do it as quickly as possible. Do not continue driving right next to the truck. Slow down or speed up so that you find your own space on the road.
The reason you don’t want to linger is that you’re in grave danger if anything goes wrong. Say that the truck loses control when a tire blows out. The driver swerves to the side of the road to get out of traffic or the truck veers that way unintentionally. No matter how it happens, you don’t want your car to be all that sits between the truck and the side of the lane.
It’s also an issue if the driver has to suddenly change lanes. Imagine that another car gets into an accident and traffic suddenly stops. The driver can’t stop fast enough to avoid a wreck and instinctively switches lanes to try to avoid crashing. If your car is in that lane, driving along in the truck’s blind spot, you’re going to get hit.
Some experts think that this area of the road is so deadly that it should be called the “kill zone.” It may not be your fault if you get hit because you have a right to that lane. However, you’re probably not too worried about fault at the moment.
